Mode of action: Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor. It inhibits secretion of acid by irreversibly blocking the enzyme system of hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase in gastric parietal cells. Indications: It is used in the treatment of Duodenal Ulcer, Gastric Ulcer, Reflux esophagitis, Resistant Ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and prevention of acid aspiration syndrome. Dosage: One capsule a day or as directed by the physician. Drug interactions: Omeprazole competes with other drugs for the subfamily 2C of the cytochrome P450 system. This reduces the rate of metabolism of diazepam, phenytoin and warfarin resulting in an increase in the plasma drug level. Adverse reactions: Diarrhoea, skin rashes and headache are reported frequently. Other adverse effects reported rarely include myalgia, blood disorders including leucopenia and thrombocytopenia. Important: Do not chew or crush the capsules. They should be swallowed whole with water. Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, Protect from light.
